Across the country, MAGA Republican-controlled legislatures are moving to redraw congressional maps mid-decade at Donald Trump’s urging. These efforts are designed to lock in GOP power in Congress ahead of the next election and undermine fair representation.
That is not how elections should work ever.
In response, Virginia leaders have put forward a proposed constitutional amendment that would give voters the chance to approve a temporary, emergency exception allowing new congressional maps for the upcoming elections.
This step was not taken lightly. But with other states stacking the deck, Virginia must act to protect fairness and ensure our federal elections reflect voters, not political manipulation.
Here is what matters most:
Virginia voters have the final say. Proposed maps will be public, and voters will decide whether they meet Virginia’s standards for fairness.
This amendment is a temporary, responsible measure that expires after the 2030 census. But it’s a crucial stopgap right now to level the playing field and ensure fair representation for Virginians.
