Kelci Dansie is a current 2L student at George Washington University Law School who fits in pro bono between classes and homework. She has conducted legal research, coordinated stakeholders, and met with legislators and representatives from Maryland Governor Moore’s office.
Barbara Monteiro de Souza is a practicing attorney in Brazil and recent LLM graduate of Columbia Law School who brings a global perspective to pro bono. She has reviewed draft legislation and joined policy meetings with academic experts.
Through their work with Helping Ourselves to Transform, Kelci and Barbara helped advance a groundbreaking survivor-centered bill in Maryland that could change how the legal system responds to intimate partner violence cases before the court. The PATH Act would allow evidence of intimate partner violence to be introduced as a mitigating factor during sentencing or modification hearings — and it currently sits with the Maryland Legislature under HB0084.
