In January 2026, Border Patrol and ICE agents form a line during protests in Minneapolis (Chad Davis/Wikimedia Commons)

Hello, everyone.

As anti-ICE protests grow following the fatally shooting of two American citizens in Minneapolis, the Trump administration has continued to reap chaos at home and abroad.

Next month will mark four years since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a conflict for which Trump hasn’t managed to secure a “deal.” Meanwhile in Kyiv, as Margaux Seigneur reports, everyday folks have put together makeshift workshops where they build drones for Ukrainian armed forces.

At the same time, yet another potential war looms. Washington has ratcheted up its threats against Iran, where the regime stands accused of killing thousands of protesters in recent weeks. In a new piece, Inkstick’s own Tyler Hicks speaks to a former Iranian political prisoner and expert on the country about his new book, an investigation of what he calls “the long war on Iran.”

“When the Border is Both the Crime and the Crime Scene” by Patrick Strickland (Jan. 26)

In a world divided by borders, the US has a long tradition of blaming people for fleeing the wars and violence it played a part in fueling. Today, Donald Trump is taking that trend to new heights.

“From Florist to Drone Maker: The Civilians Arming Ukraine’s Drone War” by Margaux Seigneur (Jan. 27)

Four years into Russia’s war on Ukraine, small volunteer civilian workshops across Kyiv are arming Ukraine’s drone war and reshaping how the war is fought.

“On Surveilling, Infiltrating, and Disrupting Fascists in America” by Patrick Strickland (Jan. 28)

In a new book, journalist Christopher Mathias avoids the tedious arguments over whether the current moment meets the strict academic definition of fascism. Rather, he sets about the difficult task of chronicling anti-fascist activists who seek neither acclaim nor reward.

“Once a Prisoner, Behrooz Ghamari Dissects the ‘Long War on Iran’” by Tyler Hicks (Jan. 29)

Last year, sociologist Behrooz Ghamari watched the news from afar as Israeli air strikes hit Iran’s Evin Prison, a facility known for torture. A former political prisoner in Evin, Ghamari has now written a new book that takes a scalpel to American policy toward Tehran.

“Deep Dive: The 12 Bells of Authoritarianism are Ringing in the US” by Inkstick Media (Jan. 30)

In a new report, Amnesty International has warned that the United States under President Donald Trump was exhibiting what it called a clear trend toward authoritarian behavior and weakening of basic rights.
