Email from Rep. Gonzales Combating the New World Screwworm I created the New World Screwworm Working Group to bring together local, state, and federal stakeholders to protect Texas' top-notch agriculture industry. On Monday, I held a NWS Working Group meeting to discuss recent developments in combating the deadly New World screwworm parasite. USDA Under Secretary of Marketing and Regulatory Programs Dudley Hoskins and APHIS Deputy Director Dr. Christopher Needham joined to us give an update on new funding available through the New World Screwworm Grand Challenge. I’m all in to help our farmers and ranchers. We will continue to be very active in working towards solutions to mitigate the screwworm parasite. On the Ground in the Permian Basin On Friday, I joined a roundtable with Texas sheriffs, oil and gas industry leaders, and Texas lawmakers to discuss the rise in oilfield theft in the Permian Basin. 15% of the world's energy resources come from West Texas. Protecting the Permian is critical. My legislation, the Protect the Permian Act, would provide law enforcement with resources to combat oil theft. Energy security is national security—conversations like the ones that took place on Friday are important in our fight to protect Texas’ energy industries. Meeting with Local Law Enforcement This week, I spent time on the road in TX-23 meeting with some of our local law enforcement and visiting their facilities. I first spoke with Bexar County Sheriff's Office West Patrol Substation deputies during their shift change. I appreciate the brave men and women who work tirelessly to keep Texans safe, and I always appreciate the opportunity to see this important work firsthand. I will always back the blue. Connecting with TX-23 Veterans On Thursday, I met with veterans in West Texas. As your representative and a veteran myself, I take my responsibility to serve veterans seriously. I always appreciate hearing from the men and women who served on how we bring ideas back to Washington to improve their quality of life. PICTURED: Congressman Gonzales with West Texas veterans. Supporting Our School Districts Great meeting with Natalia ISD Interim Superintendent Dr. Lloyd Verstuyft, Ed.D., this week.
