Dear John,
What makes Maine special? It’s the stretch of conserved forest you can wander for miles, the working farm that stays in production instead of becoming a subdivision, the lake you can still reach because public access was protected. These places didn’t survive by accident. They exist because Mainers chose—again and again—to invest in conserving the lands and waters that make our state special. For decades, Land for Maine’s Future (LMF)—the state’s most successful and celebrated land conservation program—has helped turn that shared value into real protection on the ground. Yet today, the LMF program is running low on funds, with no long-term funding plan in place. This month, we’ll discuss why LMF is so vital to Maine and why securing sustainable, long-term funding is essential to the health of our economy, our communities, and our environment. |
