Today marks the beginning of Black History Month. This month gives us an opportunity to recognize the extraordinary impact Black Marylanders have had on our state and nation. Honoring that history feels especially important this year.

From the legacy of great Marylanders like Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman, to the groundbreaking leadership of Thurgood Marshall and the trailblazing public service of Verda Welcome, Black Marylanders have shaped who we are today. They have built businesses, strengthened labor movements, expanded access to education, and led the fight for civil rights and economic justice, often while being denied the very freedoms they were demanding for others.

Especially now, when progress can feel uncertain and the truth of our history is continually challenged, we must be clear-eyed and committed. Black history is Maryland history. It is American history. It is a reminder that equity, opportunity, and democracy are not abstract ideals, but commitments we carry forward through our policies, our institutions, and our everyday actions.

Be well, and keep in touch!

My best,
