Friends, yesterday I voted NO on a bill to give EVEN MORE funding to ICE and the Department of Homeland Security.
Here’s why.
I voted no because, like you, I have seen the video footage of masked agents grabbing people off the street and even shooting people in broad daylight. They are arresting people for exercising their First Amendment right to freedom of speech, even killing two United States citizens in the last three weeks in Minneapolis.
I voted no because I recently visited the largest ICE detention facility in California and saw firsthand what I’ve heard from so many constituents — people are being held in inhumane conditions, with unacceptable access to legal counsel, medical attention, and even clean drinking water.
I voted no because ICE and CBP are not above the law. These out of control agencies must be reined in, not rewarded for acting with impunity.
Friends, we must continue to fight the cruelty and abuses of power by the Trump administration.
And that means no additional funding for ICE and CBP without real oversight and accountability.
