Dear Friend,
Journalism is not a crime—but it is being treated like one.
Today GLAAD joined the National Association of Black Journalists, the Society of Professional Journalists, and more than three dozen organizations representing journalists, LGBTQ people, and people of color, to demand justice for Don Lemon and Georgia Fort. Both were arrested by federal agents while simply doing their jobs, reporting facts from Minneapolis.
This is more than an arrest; it’s an attempt to silence storytellers and journalists who report on LGBTQ and other important news fairly and accurately. The First Amendment is not optional.
If you don't want to live in a country where the press is intimidated and anyone can be attacked for speaking out, now is the time to act.
I’m asking you to do two things:
SIGN THE PETITION ([link removed]): Add your name to our national call demanding that federal authorities halt the targeting of journalists.
MAKE A GIFT ([link removed]): Help us protect journalism and ensure GLAAD can be on the ground in Minneapolis or wherever we need to be to defend the truth.
If we want to protect our democracy, we have to protect the people who report on it. That means speaking out even if you’ve never spoken out before.
We are standing together to ensure the truth isn't a jailworthy offense. Not on our watch.
In solidarity,
Sarah Kate Ellis
