In San Francisco, Minneapolis and across our country, Americans are rising up to keep our communities safe from the tragic impact of Trump’s cruelty, corruption and attacks on our constitutional rights. Working together with patriotism and purpose, we are keeping faith with the goodness of the American people, including our immigrant friends, family and neighbors and all who choose decency and beloved community over chaos. Joining together across America, we honor the memories of Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good, who were murdered in Minnesota and we rise in solidarity with the men and women of the Minnesota National Guard, local law enforcement and all who are working to preserve community safety and protect one another from brutality and violence. All people of conscience must speak out about these horrific murders that we saw with our very own eyes and the cruelty that we can be sure is also happening behind the scenes.

In San Francisco on Tuesday, our faith community, our friends in Labor, veterans’ groups and community leaders joined my Bay Area colleague Congressman Kevin Mullin and I in lifting up the names of Renee Good and Alex Pretti and addressing this moral moment for us all with clarity and conscience and in community with one another.

And we continue with our advocacy because Trump’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is out of control under the callous lawlessness of Sec. Kristi Noem who has enabled ICE and other federal agents in the department to operate in secrecy and with impunity — making our communities less safe. Americans across party lines are demanding safety, transparency and accountability from ICE and DHS in our communities. An overwhelming majority of House Democrats had the courage to vote the right way to block further funding for ICE and their deadly, unconstitutional overreach in Minnesota and across the country. For goodness sake and the safety of the American people, Secretary Noem must be fired immediately — or face impeachment. That said, we must never lose sight of the fact that Noem is an employee of Donald Trump who is acting at his direction.

Although this is a sad time for our country, I am reminded of a recent meeting in which teenagers from our community told me: "Hope is our resistance." And I said back to them, "Your resistance is our hope." In challenging times for our country, my dear friend and colleague, the late great Congressman Elijah Cummings, would often remind us: “America, we are better than this.” Now is our time to prove it.

On International Holocaust Remembrance Day earlier this week, we remembered those persecuted and killed by the Nazis, including 6 million Jews whose stories fuel our work against anti-Semitism and hate and give us courage to fight now. Friends, this very moment can be a positive turning point for our country, but only if we make it so with unshakeable resolve to protect our communities, to uphold our values and to ensure that the cruelty and suffering that we know from our history and have witnessed ourselves never happens again. “Never again” is now.
