Well, there's a new champion in the " anti-voting legislation " category with the introduction of the Make Elections Great Again (MEGA) Act. The new bill goes far beyond even the SAVE Act, with the MEGA Act now being called " the most extreme voting restrictions ever proposed at the federal level ."
The name also tells you everything you need to know about the target audience for this bill. With Trump focused on re-litigating the 2020 election, t his legislation would give him all the power he would need to take federal control of the upcoming midterms .

While the SAVE Act focused almost exclusively on requiring voters to produce documentary proof of citizenship when registering, the MEGA Act is far more sweeping. It would:
* Impose a strict photo ID requirement to vote
* Create a centralized voter surveillance system in every state
* Mandate constant voter roll purges, gutting the “Motor Voter” law that expanded access to voter registration
* Bar states from counting ballots that arrive after Election Day
* Ban universal mail voting, in which states mail a ballot to all registered voters
* Bar the federal funding for voter registration by outside groups
* Unleash lawsuits against election officials
Estimates said the SAVE Act could disenfranchise up to 11 million eligible Americans , especially women and those who live in under-resourced communities. The MEGA Act would be much, much worse.

The scariest parts of the MEGA Act are how it goes after so much more than proof-of-citizenship at registration. States aren't mandated to provide ID to eligible citizens, but the MEGA Act would require citizens to show the right kind of ID every time they went to vote. This creates inequality, like in Texas, where you can vote with a hunting license ( which doesn't require proof of citizenship ) but you can't vote with a college photo ID.
This bill targets voter registration as well, demanding that eligible voters re-prove their citizenship every election, while also requiring states to " take affirmative steps... on an ongoing basis " every 30 days to check and verify their voter rolls. How would they check them? Using a nationwide federal database controlled by MAGA partisans, of course . And the bill calls for all these measures to be in place before we vote in November's general election.
“ There’s never been an attack on voting rights out of Congress like this ,” said Alexander Keyssar, a professor of History and Social Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, and a leading historian of voting rights said about the SAVE Act. “ It’s always been the federal government trying to keep states in check on voting rights, for the most part. ”
His words ring even more true about the MEGA Act. This bill is nothing less than an all-out partisan assault on our fundamental right to vote . If made law, this bill would codify MAGA's power for decades to come, invalidating millions of eligible voters and ending our democracy for a generation or longer.
