His name is Officer James Brennand, and right now, he's fighting for his freedom, his family, and his future.
James is an Army veteran who served his country with honor. He's a devoted father to a precious 2-year-old son. He's a San Antonio police officer who put his life on the line every single day to protect his community.
And he's being railroaded by a politically motivated district attorney.
What Really Happened
On October 2, 2022, Officer Brennand spotted a vehicle he believed had been involved in evading police the night before—with license plates that didn't match the car. Suspecting the vehicle was stolen, he called for backup and approached to prevent the suspect from fleeing again.
What happened next was captured on camera: The driver, Erik Cantu Jr., refused to exit the vehicle. Instead, he put the car in reverse. According to the passenger's own testimony, the door struck Officer Brennand, and he was dragged by the vehicle as Cantu attempted to escape.
In a split second—fearing for his life as he was being dragged by a fleeing vehicle—Officer Brennand made the decision he was trained to make. He used his service weapon to stop the threat.
Erik Cantu Jr. survived. His passenger was unharmed. And since the incident? Cantu has been arrested four more times and is currently on house arrest. Charges against him—including evading detention and assault on an officer—have mysteriously been dropped.
But Officer Brennand? He's facing LIFE IN PRISON.
Charged with aggravated assault by a public servant.
Charged with deadly conduct.
