Hi John, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows here.
Yesterday, the FBI raided the Fulton County, Georgia elections office – seizing ballots and election records from the 2020 presidential election.
Let that sink in.
Years after Donald Trump lost in 2020, conspiracy theories about a “stolen election” are now being weaponized into raids by the FBI.
And it’s why what’s happened here in Maine can’t be ignored.
Beginning last summer, Trump’s Department of Justice sued me and the State of Maine to try to force us to hand over personal voter data.
Let’s be clear about what this was: a blatant attempt to fuel conspiracy theories about our elections being stolen – and to pressure election officials into turning over sensitive voter information to advance a political narrative.
I refused.
As Maine’s Secretary of State, my job is to protect voters’ privacy and the integrity of our elections – not to help legitimize lies that undermine public trust. Handing over that data would have put Mainers at risk and set a dangerous precedent nationwide.
What we’re seeing in Georgia is the logical next step when those lies go unchecked: election workers targeted, offices raided, and law enforcement used to keep false narratives alive, because Donald Trump can’t accept that he lost in 2020.
Standing up to these attacks takes a movement – people like you, raising your voices and showing that Maine will never back down.
That’s why I’m asking: before midnight tonight, will you contribute $20 between me and DASS? If you believe in protecting free and fair elections from political interference, now is the moment to act.
