When I first heard about the Climate Superfund bill, it was something I was excited about. It’s such a simple premise, as you’ll hear us say: “You make a mess, you clean it up.” I teach my 7-year-old son this lesson, why should multi-billion dollar companies be held to lower standards?
Opponents will try to make it more complicated than that, but truly; it isn’t.
These large fossil fuel companies have known for decades what the emissions from their product are doing to the planet. But instead of being transparent they have denied the reality, and in many cases funded huge misinformation campaigns.
We have a long history of holding companies accountable in just this way. We did it with polluters in the 70's, we did it with tobacco companies, and we did it with pharmaceuticals most recently. It’s time to make polluters pay in 2026.
I hope you’ll join me in raising your voice in support of the Maine Climate Superfund Act.
