On January 24, ICE fatally shot U.S. citizen Alex Pretti in Minnesota, just weeks after the shooting of Renee Good. Pretti tried to protect a woman who had been thrown onto the ice in subzero temperatures by an ICE officer—and was shot ten times for it.
This incident highlights the dangers of deploying federal immigration agents in civilian situations without clear expectations or accountability. Advocates have described the shooting as indicative of what can go wrong when armed agents operate with limited training and little consequence for using deadly force. ([link removed])

Over the past year, ICE has doubled its workforce by bribing officers with $50,000 sign-on bonuses ([link removed]) . It is the fastest expansion of a single federal agency, aimed at supporting Trump’s mass deportation agenda.
ICE keeps most of its agency information hidden ([link removed]) , which undermines democratic norms and modern community-oriented policing. The information that is available shows that ICE agents are encouraged to use deadly force and are seldom trained in de-escalation.
This is not new. From 2015 to 2021, there were 59 shootings by ICE officers ([link removed]) , resulting in 47 casualties. None of the agents involved faced criminal charges.
Pretti’s death shows that ICE agents act without facing repercussions. ICE’s violent history and lack of accountability puts everyone at risk. Join Immigrants’ List in fighting for accountability and taking part in the larger conversation.
