John, it’s Hannah Pingree.
This has been a challenging time in Maine. We are watching ICE tear apart families and take our neighbors, ignoring due process, and killing citizens in the street.
Certainly, this week has shown how who we elect to public office matters, and the vote about to happen in Washington shows how important elections are to stopping Trump. My Senator, Susan Collins, is the Chair of the powerful Appropriations Committee. Collins, in response to the backlash against ICE's actions, suggested that she had added funding for body cameras and more training for ICE. This is NOT a serious response to the moment we are in. Her position is untenable. At this moment, vague statements and half-measures aren’t leadership.
I have called on Senator Collins to vote “NO” on the DHS funding bull and I need you to do the same.
We have a phrase in Maine: Dirigo. It’s Maine’s motto, and it means “I lead.” Moments like this require principled leadership – and it’s what I’ve been doing my whole career. I've fought big enemies and stood up to do the right thing – even when it was hard. I fought the major chemical industries who worked hard to defeat our efforts to take toxic chemicals out of consumer products. And I stood up to help lead the fight to pass gay marriage, even when some people thought it was too politically risky. But it was the right thing to do for families.
And this is another big fight that we must win. We need more leaders willing to call on Congress to stop this madness - from ICE to all of Trump's overreaches. But this vote this week is important and we need your help.
So, can you take a moment to sign our petition to urge Senator Collins to vote NO on DHS and ICE funding this week?
This is the moment for guts and brave leaders. The future of our democracy, our communities, and our basic sense of decency depend on it.
Also, you can give her office a call here: 202-224-2523.
Thank you for all you are doing in this important fight for Maine families. Stay warm out there!
Hannah
