John,

Imagine being a child alone in a new country after fleeing violence, abuse or persecution. No parent. No lawyer. No idea what happens next.

For tens of thousands of unaccompanied children arriving in the U.S. each year, this is reality.

HOW IRC PROTECTS CHILDREN »

Unaccompanied children come to the U.S. seeking safety for many reasons. Some are escaping gang violence, abuse or the threat of trafficking. Others have lost parents or caregivers and have no choice but to make the dangerous journey on their own.

Once they arrive in the U.S., they are placed into a complex immigration system that will determine whether they are protected, or sent back to danger.

For years, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) has stood with unaccompanied children, providing protection services, legal aid and long-term support so children can understand their rights and have a fair chance at safety. But this work is increasingly under threat. Federal funding that helps ensure children have access to legal representation is set to expire at the end of this month, even as need continues to rise.

Let's be clear: No child should have to face these challenges alone.

With your support, the IRC helps unaccompanied children understand their rights, access critical services and receive trauma-informed legal representation—ensuring they are not forced to face immigration court alone.
