On Saturday an immigration agent decided to become judge, jury, and executioner when he senselessly murdered Alex Pretti after pepper-spraying him, beating him, and tackling him to the ground.

Today, we don’t know who this agent is. We don’t know who is responsible for shooting an American citizen in the streets. But the administration has confirmed that he is already back on the job.

This is a criminal coverup of a murder, and more proof that the administration is shielding their immigration agents from any form of accountability, responsibility, and justice under the law.

I have pushed for years to address this exact problem. Federal officers at agencies like ICE and CBP enjoy Qualified Immunity. It protects them from ever being brought to court by the victims of their violence and civil rights violations. That has to end, now.

That’s why I’m reintroducing my bill to strip ICE and other federal agents of their immunity to civil cases. If my bill were passed, Alex Pretti’s family could sue the immigration officer who killed their son for damages and restitution, regardless of what the administration has to say.

So, if you haven’t already, please: Add your name as a Citizen Co-Sponsor on my bill to end Qualified Immunity for all federal law enforcement. It is outrageous that anyone tasked with protecting our nation and enforcing its laws can act with complete impunity. Justice must be served for Alex Pretti and everyone else who has been harassed, brutalized, and killed.
