Belichick’s Hall of Fame Snub Puts Voting Process Under Scrutiny [[link removed]]

Bill Belichick will not be a first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Fame member after not receiving enough votes earlier this month, according to ESPN [[link removed]].

The 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame class will be unveiled Feb. 5 at the NFL Honors. But Belichick was notified Friday that he won’t be inducted this year, per ESPN.

Belichick, who won six Super Bowls as head coach of the Patriots, was one of five finalists in the coach, contributor, and seniors categories, alongside New England owner Robert Kraft and former players Ken Anderson, Roger Craig, and L.C. Greenwood.

This was the first year of eligibility for Belichick, who last coached the Patriots during the 2023 season. He is now the coach of the North Carolina football team [[link removed]]. A set of rule changes made in 2024 shortened the waiting period for coaches from five seasons to just one and moved their selection into the same grouping as senior players and contributors.

The 50 members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s selection committee [[link removed]] were allowed to vote for up to three of this year’s five finalists, and 80% approval was required for election. That means at least 11 voters did not vote for Belichick.

That vote was separate from the 15 modern-era player finalists, of which voters were allowed to vote for 5.

The HOF selection committee is made up of one media representative from each pro football city, with two each from Los Angeles and New York. A 33rd member is a representative of the Pro Football Writers of America, and there are up to 17 at-large delegates. The at-large members are a mixture of other media members and former NFL coaches and executives.

With the exception of the PFWA representative, who is appointed for a two-year term, all appointments are reviewed annually and approved by the HOF’s board of directors.

Belichick, who also won two Super Bowls as the defensive coordinator of the Giants, was widely believed to be locked in as a first-ballot HOFer.

As of Wednesday morning, 22 voters had confirmed to journalist Ollie Connolly that they had indeed voted for Belichick [[link removed]].

ESPN reported that former Colts GM Bill Polian, a HOF voter, told other voters that Belichick should have to wait a year [[link removed]] to be selected as punishment for Spygate and Deflategate, which Polian later denied to ESPN. However, when asked whether he voted for Belichick, Polian said he was 95% sure he did.

NFL Conference Title Game Ratings Slip Despite Strong Season [[link removed]]

The NFL’s run of big viewership this season ran into a much more mixed scenario for Sunday’s conference championship games.

CBS said late Tuesday that it averaged 48.6 million viewers for the Patriots’ 10–7 win over the Broncos in the AFC title game, up 10% from last year’s NFC championship clash in the same Sunday afternoon window. The dramatic contest peaked with an audience of 57.8 million viewers, making it the most-watched playoff game this season.

The New England–Denver game also completed what was the most-watched NFL season ever for CBS, with a per-game average of 23.1 million viewers.

Fox, meanwhile, said it averaged 46.1 million viewers for the Seahawks’ 31–27 win over the Rams in the NFC championship, down 20% from the AFC title game that held the Sunday evening broadcast window last year and set several audience records [[link removed]]. The NFC broadcast peaked in the fourth quarter with an audience of 49.7 million.

The collective average of about 47.4 million viewers for the two games was down 7% from last year and is the least-watched title game on a Sunday since 2021.

Notably, both conference championship games drew a smaller audience than the Thanksgiving Day matchup between the Chiefs and Cowboys—both non-playoff teams—that averaged 57.2 million viewers [[link removed]] and set a league record in the regular season.

Viewership trends for the two NFL conference championship games were likely influenced—both positively and negatively—by a massive winter storm last weekend [[link removed]] that also caused numerous game postponements and cancellations in sports. Snowy weather also hit Denver during the latter portion of the Patriots-Broncos game. While football viewership historically has grown during periods of inclement weather, the particularly deep impact of the latest storm also cut into group and out-of-home viewing that is core to NFL audience patterns.

Additionally, the NFC broadcast also saw a geographic drag from the matchup of two NFC West division rivals playing for the third time this season

Still, a Big Season

The more disparate numbers for the networks and the league follow a dominant run of audience increases seen during the divisional playoff round [[link removed]], the wild-card round [[link removed]], the regular season, [[link removed]] and on streaming [[link removed]].

Like the earlier parts of the 2025 NFL season, the conference championship round was the first to benefit from the arrival of new and expanded Nielsen methodologies to track audiences, notably Big Data + Panel [[link removed]].

The Seahawks and Patriots are now set to compete in Super Bowl LX [[link removed]] from Levi’s Stadium. That game, to be shown on NBC, will look to challenge, if not surpass, the U.S. television viewership record of an average of 127.7 million viewers [[link removed]] set last year for Super Bowl LIX on Fox.

The Comcast-owned NBC is leaning in to its upcoming Super Bowl LX coverage by combining much of its promotion and ad sales for the event with coverage next month of the 2026 Winter Olympics and NBA All-Star Game [[link removed]]. The Super Bowl will also represent one of, if not the single largest, event ever on its Peacock streaming service [[link removed]].

Netflix ⬆ The streaming service announced Wednesday that it will stream Tyson Fury’s return fight against Arslanbek Makhmudov live on April 11. The event will be the fifth boxing card streamed on Netflix, with Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua [[link removed]] headlining the most recent on Dec. 19. Netflix continues to invest in live events after starting 2026 off with 6.2 million viewers [[link removed]] tuning in to watch Alex Honnold’s free solo climb of Taipei 101.

Jets ⬆⬇ New York is now without an offensive coordinator, as the team reportedly parted ways with Tanner Engstrand. The Jets reportedly contacted Jon Gruden about joining the offensive staff, but the former head coach wasn’t interested in the job. Aaron Glenn opened one role on his staff, but filled another, hiring Brian Duker as the team’s defensive coordinator. Duker worked with the Jets head coach in Detroit and was the Dolphins’ pass game coordinator/secondary coach for the past two seasons.

Mookie Betts ⬆ The Dodgers shortstop is taking his talents from the diamond to the hardwood to coach in the 2026 NBA All-Star Celebrity Game. Due to the proximity to spring training, no active MLB player has ever played in the game, with Albert Pujols playing in 2023 after his retirement. Betts will not be the first player to coach, as José Bautista, Alex Bregman, and most recently Barry Bonds have coached in the exhibition.

Portland Fire ⬆ The WNBA expansion team, set to enter the league in 2026, unveiled two uniforms for the upcoming season. One jersey is red with “Portland” in black lettering across the chest, while the other is white and reads “Fire” in red. The WNBA and players’ union are still negotiating a new CBA [[link removed]], but if the season tips off on schedule [[link removed]], the Fire will debut May 9 against the Chicago Sky.
