30 years in, looking forward together

This year, Forum for the Future marks 30 years of building change-making collaborations for a just and regenerative world. As we approach this milestone, I’ve been reflecting on how far we’ve come, and what this moment demands of all of us as we navigate overlapping social, ecological and economic crises.

What has sustained Forum over three decades is our belief in collaboration — convening unlikely partners, applying futures and systems thinking, and creating the conditions for long-term transformation. You can see this ethos at work across our programmes, from the Climate and Health Coalition, to Growing our Future and initiatives such as the Responsible Energy Initiative

As we look ahead to the next 30 years, our focus remains on deepening impact and supporting bold, collective action that enables organisations, communities and systems to flourish. This month's newsletter offers a snapshot of that work in motion.

Thank you for being part of Forum’s global community, and for the commitment you bring to shaping a just and regenerative future.

A new taxonomy: How can AI accelerate or exacerbate social justice in the energy transition?

Extensive research on energy justice and AI ethics exists, but there is little examination of these topics together. Given AI’s momentum in the renewable energy transition, there is an imperative to understand how AI might accelerate or exacerbate social (in)justice in the transition to renewable energy systems.

To address this need, Forum has created a 12-issue taxonomy of social justice issues impacting and impacted by the deployment of AI in the RE transition.

A new white paper on the role of woody biomass in decarbonization and systemic circularity
Woody biomass will play a key role in decarbonisation pathways, with material properties that make it well suited to a circular transition. Yet without coordination, well intentioned interventions risk entrenching inefficiencies and destablising critical parts of the system.

Our latest white paper provides a multi-sector analysis and implications of a circular economy for woody biomass; practical interventions for system change; and principles to act as a decision-making framework for a circular bioeconomy.

Launch of the Vision and Principles for a Responsible Renewable Energy System in the Philippines

The Responsible Energy Initiative (REI) Philippines’ Vision and Principles articulate a shared foundation for advancing renewable energy in ways that are rights-based, inclusive, and nature-positive. Developed through a collaborative, multi-stakeholder process, REI PH cohort members shared their reflections on these principles matter for real-world decision-making and how they can guide more equitable and sustainable outcomes.
