And this is a moment of acute need. The aftermath of an extreme storm can inflict lasting damage, even after the worst of the weather has passed — with sustained power outages, impassable roads, and disrupted access to food and medical care.

One group that’s supporting critical response and recovery work right now is REBUILD.US. They’re made up of disaster-response professionals, community organizers, and philanthropy experts who are building a people-centered disaster-relief system for our new climate-crisis reality. Right now, they’re delivering rapid-response grants to vetted partner organizations on the ground in the places bearing the brunt of the damage from this winter storm: Tennessee, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Georgia.

Eighteen states and 160 million Americans have been impacted, including many Southern communities that don’t have the infrastructure to handle these conditions. Road closures, power outages, and extreme cold temperatures are particularly dangerous for those without reliable heat or warm clothing, people who rely on specific medical equipment, rural communities with limited infrastructure, older Americans, and individuals facing housing and food insecurity.

REBUILD.US is funding local groups in the storm’s path to deliver supplies like warm clothing, generators, heaters, flashlights, non-perishable food, clean water, and gift cards ; to ensure access to warming centers and food pantries ; to provide real-time safety guidance ; and to conduct wellness checks .
