Friend, 

I spent the weekend in Sioux Falls, kicking off my statewide petition drive-through tour. It was negative four degrees outside. As I met with hundreds of voters, the cold wasn't what they wanted to talk about.

They wanted to talk about the horror we all witnessed: ICE murdered a man in Minneapolis on Saturday.

They shot him in the back while he was lying on the ground, disarmed, and dogpiled by half a dozen agents. It was grotesque, brutal, and sickening.

But what makes it even more galling is that almost immediately, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem started lying about it. She claimed he was violent and brandished a firearm, even though multiple videos from various angles prove that is a lie.

This is a systemic rot within the Department of Homeland Security. I was an Air Force JAG for 19 years. I care about the principles of law, justice, and the rule of law. What we are seeing now—masked federal agents smashing car windows and killing people in the streets—is not the America I served to protect.

Let me be clear: America does not need ICE as it exists today. It was cooked up by a reactive Congress in 2002, and career politicians like Mike Rounds have let it grow into a lawless "hammer" that treats every immigrant like a "nail."

It is time to Melt ICE.

As your Independent Senator, I will move to dismantle this failed three-letter agency and return its duties to departments that actually understand their missions:

* Immigration is a labor issue. We should move immigration services back to the Department of Labor, where it lived for decades before 2003.
* Enforcement belongs in the Department of Justice, where there is actual oversight and accountability.
* Customs belongs in the Department of Commerce, focusing on trade and the economy, not violence.

We cannot have a government that assumes "good-faith leaders" will always be in charge. We can just look to Kristi Noem to prove they won't be. We need structural reform that protects the dignity of human beings and the safety of our communities.

I am running as an Independent because Mike Rounds is too tied to the party line to even demand an independent investigation into this murder.
