This weekend’s snowstorm left millions without power and heat while the most
extreme cold set in. For many of us, that weather meant: **hunker down and
wait it out.** But the truth is, winter doesn’t work that way for everyone.


This storm and emergencies like it push people already in crisis much deeper –
into hunger and homelessness. Heating bills spike. Illness spreads and missed
work means missed paychecks. Veterans, older adults and families are forced to
seek help, not because they planned to, but because they ran out of options.

**VOA’s doors were already open before this storm hit. Not just physically _
_open__ – but __ready__.** Our teams work within a network of care that brings
warm shelter, hot meals, mental health support and stability to those in
urgent need. And when someone shows up – including those hit hard by this
recent storm – they’re not left to figure it out on their own.
