220 young people were detained at Allegheny County’s juvenile detention center ([link removed]) during the facility’s first full year in operation since reopening in 2024 under a new name and private management.
Highland Detention Detention Center, formerly known as Shuman Juvenile Detention Center, reopened in July 2024 with 12 beds and plans to expand to 60 ([link removed]) .
Seven of every eight detainees last year were Black, prompting an oversight board to consider an investigation into the racial disparity ([link removed]) .
