Last year, Congress passed H.R. 1, the One Big Beautiful Bill, into law. This bill requires able-bodied childless adults of working age on Medicaid to work, be looking for work, go to school, or volunteer at least 20 hours a week to receive government benefits.
Work requirements for able-bodied, childless adults in programs like Medicaid strengthen these programs for whom they were designed to serve: pregnant women, children, and disabled Americans. These reforms will save taxpayers $317 billion.
The bill also requires eligibility checks twice a year. These checks ensure only eligible enrollees are receiving taxpayer funded assistance. Reforms like this help fight waste, fraud, and abuse, including the fraud we saw in Minnesota.
