When the Missouri state legislature passed an extremely gerrymandered congressional map last year, many lawmakers believed it was a done deal — they’d just successfully helped D.C. politicians with a power grab by weakening the voting rights of communities of color.
The people of Missouri said not so fast.
More than 300,000 voters signed petitions to force a statewide vote on this gerrymander.
Now, map manipulators are going out of their way to fight it.
Here’s the latest attempt to undermine democracy: Missouri’s secretary of state recently admitted to writing the summary for the voter-led ballot initiative in a way that was likely to bias them. This rejected language framed the new map passed last year as a replacement for “Missouri’s existing gerrymander”. This comes on the heels of the secretary of state arbitrarily refusing to count legally collected signatures on the initiative.
The anti-democracy movement in Missouri knows what they’re doing is unpopular. They know they need to sow confusion and bend the rules to win.
The rejection of this extreme gerrymander in Missouri will be a massive victory for the fair maps movement. Donate today to help empower the voters fighting back against our national redistricting crisis everywhere, and make sure the will of the people prevails this fall.
