As Maryland’s legislative session begins, I want to share what my office is focused on this year and why this moment matters.
We enter 2026 in a challenging environment. Federal protections are weakening, the State is facing a significant budget shortfall, and too often, Marylanders are asked to bear the cost when powerful interests evade accountability.
That is exactly why my office is starting the year with a clear set of priorities: enforcing the law, protecting Marylanders, and using every legal tool available to deliver real results.
Over the past year, we have done just that.
* We have taken unprecedented legal action to defend Maryland against unlawful federal policies and secured millions of dollars for schools, infrastructure, and public services.
* We protected education funding, safeguarded transportation dollars, and stopped efforts that would have stripped resources from communities across the State.
* We held bad actors accountable, recovered record-breaking restitution for tenants, protected nursing home residents, and delivered meaningful relief to families who were harmed.
That work is the foundation for the year ahead.
As the General Assembly convenes, my office will support legislation that advances justice reform, strengthens public safety, protects consumers, and defends civil rights. That includes limiting the automatic charging of youth as adults, reducing unnecessary traffic stops, expanding access to education for justice-involved youth, and strengthening protections for voting rights.
At the same time, we will continue to protect Maryland’s resources through the courts. Whether it is defending federal funding, enforcing civil rights laws, or holding corporations and polluters accountable, my commitment is the same: results that matter to Marylanders.
I am grateful to everyone who has stood with us and helped make this progress possible. With your continued support, we will continue to use the law to protect Maryland and deliver the accountability our communities deserve.
Thank you,
Anthony Brown
Maryland Attorney General
