Dear John,

This past weekend, we witnessed the killing of another innocent U.S. citizen at the hands of the Department of Homeland Security and ICE.

We are horrified and infuriated by this senseless tragedy, and heartbroken for the families of Alex Pretti, Renée Good, Keith Porter, and the many others who have been harmed. We are also deeply concerned for members of our own community here in California, who are frightened for themselves and their loved ones. Please know that ARC remains a place of safety, hope, and healing. If you need anything, do not hesitate to reach out.

ARC is made up of formerly incarcerated people, who have spent decades in prison doing the difficult work of transforming our lives. We are deeply aware of the impacts of our past actions and the need for accountability. Change is impossible without it.

We are equally aware of the damage caused by decades of fear-based policy making: the War on Drugs, three-strikes law, and other legislation driven by rhetoric that exaggerates crime, dehumanizes people, and relies on mistruths to justify harm. These narratives have fueled mass incarceration, and the resulting destruction of entire communities.

Today, this same rhetoric coming from our administration, about targeting “the worst of the worst”, is driving rampant abuse, constitutional violations, and the killing of peaceful protesters. The cruelty is staggering, but so is the familiarity of how we arrived here.

We implore our community, and anyone who follows our work, to not fall for this zero-sum, ‘us vs. them’ rhetoric, and for fearmongering masquerading as truth. Remember what our own history shows us: when we allow lies about “others” to go unchallenged, the consequences are real, and they are deadly.

ARC stands with our immigrant community, with the peaceful protesters in Minnesota and elsewhere, and with the businesses and public figures using their platforms to denounce this insanity.

Yours,

The Anti-Recidivism Coalition
