Multiple injured after driver strikes pedestrians on Hollywood sidewalk

Several pedestrians were injured Sunday afternoon after a vehicle jumped the sidewalk and struck people near a busy intersection in Hollywood, according to the LAPD. Officers responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian collision at approximately 2:20 p.m. near Cahuenga and Sunset Boulevard. 17-year-old admits he stabbed, tried to kill New Jersey officer after seeking to join ISIS

A Virginia teen who admitted in court that he wanted to join ISIS pleaded guilty Thursday to attempted murder and related offenses for a stabbing attack last year on a Florence Township police officer, Burlington County Prosecutor LaChia L. Bradshaw said Friday. Fasihullah Safar, 17, of Alexandria, Va., was charged as an adult and will be sentenced to 18 years in prison under a plea deal, Bradshaw said. He is scheduled to be formally sentenced on March 26 in Superior Court in Mount Holly. The police officer who was stabbed several times in the chest was wearing a ballistic vest that prevented more significant injuries, Bradshaw said. On March 21, 2025, Safar, who was 16 at the time, was driving a stolen vehicle when he intentionally caused a crash with another vehicle, Bradshaw said. A Florence police vehicle responding to the scene was then struck multiple times by Safar’s vehicle. Safar’s vehicle became inoperable on Route 130 near Station Road. When officers arrived, Safar charged them while armed with a knife, Bradshaw said. Besides the officer who was stabbed, suffering a laceration to his torso and facial injuries, two other officers sustained minor injuries. During the struggle, Safar also cut himself.

Homicide rate declines sharply in 31 out of 35 tracked U.S. cities, new report shows

Data collected from 35 American cities showed a 21% decrease in the homicide rate from 2024 to 2025, translating to about 922 fewer homicides last year, according to a new report from the independent Council on Criminal Justice. The report, released on Thursday, tracked 13 crimes and recorded drops last year in 11 of those categories including carjackings, shoplifting, aggravated assaults and others. Drug crimes saw a small increase over last year and sexual assaults stayed even between 2024 and 2025, the study found. Experts said cities and states beyond those surveyed showed similar declines in homicides and other crimes. Adam Gelb, president and CEO of the council — a nonpartisan think tank for criminal justice policy and research — said that after historic increases in violence during the COVID-19 pandemic, this year brought historic decreases. The study found some cities recorded decades-low numbers, with the overall homicide rate dropping to its lowest in decades. “It’s a dramatic drop to an absolutely astonishing level. As we celebrate it we also need to unpack and try to understand it,” Gelb said. “There’s never one reason crime goes up or down.”

A transit project connecting L.A.’s Westside to the San Fernando Valley finally gets approval

One of the most heavily traveled and congested corridors in Los Angeles County could finally get some relief. L.A. Metro’s board of directors unanimously approved an underground heavy-rail option of the multibillion-dollar Sepulveda Transit Corridor project, which offers an alternative to the increasingly crowded 405 Freeway. The option, which was pushed forward by Metro’s planning and programming committee last week, would go from Van Nuys to Sherman Oaks, pass under the mountains and Bel-Air, stop at UCLA and ultimately end at the E Line’s Expo/Sepulveda Station. Although it is considered one of the most significant transit projects in the country, billions of dollars have yet to be secured, and questions remain about its timeline. Despite the project being the subject of multiple Metro community meetings and eliciting thousands of remarks for and against various proposals, public comment was overwhelmingly supportive when Metro’s board approved the plan last week. The busy corridor and solutions to improve it have been under discussion for decades, The Times’ Colleen Shalby wrote. Ethan Elkind, a rail expert and director of the climate program at the Center for Law, Energy and the Environment at UC Berkeley, told her that a variety of political and logistical factors have slowed the project’s progress: a focus on downtown transit, opposition to high-capacity transit in the San Fernando Valley and geological challenges in the Sepulveda Pass.
