Property Tax Update: Homestead Exemptions for People with Disabilities

Property taxes can be a major source of stress for Texas homeowners, especially those living with disabilities. Fortunately, the State of Texas offers a range of homestead exemptions designed to ease this burden and make homeownership more affordable and secure for everyone.

In November, Texas voters made a real difference by approving new measures that significantly increase the value of these exemptions. Proposition 13 increased the general homestead exemption to $140,000 while Proposition 11 increased the exemption for the elderly and disabled to $60,000, creating opportunities for real savings. Homeowners who already have been approved for exemptions should have seen these savings when they received their 2025 property tax bill from the local tax office.

Many people don’t realize that these exemption programs can help them reduce their property taxes and offer other additional benefits. To increase public awareness, GCPD recorded a short webinar to share information on what is included with the exemptions and how to apply for the exemptions with your local appraisal district.
