Why Local Leadership Matters More Than Ever

We are witnessing the devastating consequences of the Trump administration’s agenda of fear and cruelty.

In just over two weeks, federal immigration agents have killed Renee Good and Alex Jeffrey Pretti in Minneapolis. Masked, militarized agents are terrorizing communities, acting at the direct orders of President Trump and his allies. This is not law enforcement. This is federal brutality.

In Cook County, we are standing with our communities:

  • Banning ICE from using any County resources or property
  • Increasing investment in legal defense for those directly impacted
  • Speaking out and standing with organizers and community members
  • But we need more. It is time to abolish ICE. It is time to end federal occupation of our communities.

What Families in Cook County Are Facing Now

Under Trump’s new SNAP work requirements, thousands of our neighbors face rising food insecurity -  just as costs soar and families are stretched thin.

In Illinois, nearly 400,000 residents could lose SNAP benefits by May 1, 2026.

Starting February 1, 2026, Illinois will be required to enforce these new work rules.
Anyone who can’t meet them could lose benefits by May 1.

That’s why I’m working with partners like the Greater Chicago Food Depository and Cook County Health, we are protecting access to food and fighting back against policies that weaken the safety net.

Food is not a luxury. It’s a basic human need, foundational to health, dignity, and opportunity.

As the Chicago Sun-Times reports: “New SNAP work requirements could worsen health outcomes in Cook County”, losing SNAP has real consequences: more ER visits, more unmanaged chronic illness, more preventable crises and higher costs for everyone.

Expanding Support Where It Matters

I am proud to launch Healthy Beginnings, a new initiative to support families before, during, and after pregnancy.

Healthy Beginnings connects parents to:

  • Health care and home visiting

  • Mental health and behavioral supports

  • Wrap-around services like housing, nutrition assistance, transportation, and insurance resources

This program reduces risks for mothers and infants and targets longstanding inequities in maternal health. Black women in Illinois are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women, many of which are preventable with early, coordinated care. Healthy Beginnings helps close that gap.

When Trump and his allies threaten our services and our communities, local leadership matters more than ever. I’m running for re‑election to protect essential services, defend families, and show what government should do for its constituents.
