John,
The Trump administration is undertaking an Orwellian plot to erase the history of Social Security, setting the stage for the utter destruction of the program.
We need to fight back now, before it’s too late.
After slapping his name on the Kennedy Center and reducing the East Wing of the White House to rubble, the Trump administration has its sights set on the Wilbur J. Cohen Federal Building, which was constructed to be the original headquarters of the Social Security Administration. In that spirit, the building was designed to incorporate publicly owned art that inspired civic pride and common purpose in the public servants who reported for duty in the building.
We’re raising a ruckus that has already been noticed by the Washington Post. Can you send a message to GSA Administrator Michael Rigas and STOP this attack on Social Security’s history?
The walls of the Cohen building are covered in historically significant murals such as Ben Shahn’s The Meaning of Social Security and Seymour Fogel’s The Wealth of the Nation.
But this is about more than a building―it erases the true history of our Social Security system. This is consistent with the patchwork of lies that Donald Trump and his allies have spread about Social Security throughout his 2nd term, part of a renewed push toward privatizing the last pillar of economic stability that many Americans can count on.
Social Security was created for a purpose. Before Social Security was enacted, half of seniors lived in poverty. Today, fewer than 10% do. That’s why the New Deal was greeted with such exultation.
For decades, Republican politicians have sought to dismantle the Social Security system that was built by the New Deal, and expanded by successive administrations of both parties. Every time, they have failed because the American people know the meaning of Social Security, and the value it holds in their lives.
Thus, in order to dismantle Social Security, today’s billionaires and the politicians who serve them are undertaking a project of propaganda to eradicate the public’s memory of life before Social Security.
We cannot allow this Orwellian plot to destroy Social Security to succeed.
Take Action: Call on the General Services Administration to immediately cease all plans to destroy the Wilbur J. Cohen Federal Building, the Sistine Chapel of American Art.
In solidarity,
Alex Lawson Social Security Works
