Dear John,
My name is Darrel, and I’m proud to serve as a regional organizer with Powered by People, working on the ground across North DFW.
I want to share a bit of my journey and why this work matters so deeply to me.
I first stepped into politics by running for city council, a race I lost by just two votes. That two-vote margin made something very clear to me: organizing matters, and every conversation counts. Instead of walking away, I leaned in. In 2024, I ran for Texas House District 89. I didn’t win that race either, but what I gained was a deeper understanding of what it takes to build real, lasting Democratic power.
For the past five years, I’ve stayed in the fight as a precinct chair and by taking on leadership roles within the Collin County Democratic Party. Those experiences prepared me for the work I’m now doing every single day.
Today, as Powered by People’s regional organizer for North DFW, I oversee a large and diverse 13-county area. That includes high-priority counties like Denton, Collin, and Hunt, as well as rural and underserved counties like Grayson, Lamar, Delta, Hopkins, Clay, and several others. Many of these communities have little to no Democratic infrastructure, and that is where our work is most urgent.
My job is to recruit and train local hosts, register new voters, support volunteers, and help build sustainable Democratic organizing in places that are too often overlooked.
This is long-term, people-powered work, and I can tell you from personal experience that it only happens with grassroots support.
Every step forward, every new volunteer, every new voter, every new host, every new event is possible because people like you choose to invest in this work.
Thank you for believing in the power of grassroots organizing and for standing with us as we build a stronger, more inclusive future for North Texas.
In solidarity,
Darrel
