Dear Friends,

This week has been full of historical remembrances — both good and bad.

We began this week celebrating the national holiday and commemorating the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., his partner in life and in justice, Coretta Scott King, and the other national heroes and heroines of the Civil Rights movement. Dr. King and Coretta Scott King stood for peace, justice, jobs, and every good thing in our society. They learned more about nonviolence from the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi on their travels to India and brought this gift home to the United States. The Kings’ lives of service are shining examples of deep, abiding faith and commitment to liberty, justice and beloved community — what our country has always been about and what we continue to fight for.

We marked the 53rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade — a pillar of health and freedom until a radical and rogue Republican Supreme Court took away our constitutional right to choose the size and timing of our families.

As we warned from the start 16 years ago, the disastrous Citizens United Supreme Court decision has let big dark money poison our politics — enabling GOP extremists to take away our rights, pollute our environment, make us less safe, and destroy our health care while handing tax breaks to their wealthy donors. Democrats will never stop fighting for a government of the many — not the money.

And despite the successful efforts begun by Leader Jeffries to pass a three year extension for the Affordable Care Act Tax credits that help millions of Americans, Senate Republicans have not called for a vote and, instead, are threatening to break the filibuster to pass their deceptively named SAVE Act that actually removes voter protections — especially for 69 million married American women. We’ve been sounding the alarm about this for over a year, and Republicans are still up to their tricks to diminish our Democracy and increase their power by shrinking the electorate. Republican Senators would rather take away your voting rights than restore your health care. This is sad and shameful — but also true.

But just like the King national holiday reminds us, we have power in all of this. I proudly voted NO on the Department of Homeland Security appropriations, because it is now clear that Donald Trump and Republicans slashed Americans’ health care funding to write a blank check for Trump’s cruelty and recklessness. We can call our Senators to tell them NO on the deceptive SAVE Act and YES on the extensions of the ACA tax credits.

We are on the right side of history and when we come together in beloved community, there is nothing we cannot do. We must insist on the truth of what is happening in our country right now and recognize the truth in the ways we can make a difference. The biggest antidote to the poison they are spreading is to win elections. We don’t agonize — we organize!

There is already proof that Americans are sick and tired of this unfortunate and unnecessary mess created by the President and his enablers. So we have to keep insisting on speaking the truth, sharing our stories, supporting and protecting one another day after day — and our insistence will be rewarded on Election Day.

We made it through the first year of this disgraceful Administration and we are on the way to taking back the House and providing an important check of accountability and delivering on our vision for a better future.
