Last month, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) voted to shut itself down. Here is an excerpt from their press release:
"CPB's Board determined that without the resources to fulfill its congressionally mandated responsibilities, maintaining the corporation as a nonfunctional entity would not serve the public interest or advance the goals of public media.
A dormant and defunded CPB could have become vulnerable to future political manipulation or misuse, threatening the independence of public media and the trust audiences place in it, and potentially subjecting staff and board members to legal exposure from bad-faith actors."
Trump's attacks on public media and its funding have consequences, and it is saddening to hear that CPB is choosing to close its doors. CPB has been responsible for funding public media like NPR and PBS, and it will be a devastating loss for Northwest Washington if we lose these programs as well.
PBS is not just television. It is a public service.
For decades, PBS has offered fact-based journalism, lifelong learning, children's programming like Sesame Street, and award-winning documentaries that bring history, science, and culture into homes across America. It reaches over 120 million people every month, and for many, it is their only source of non-commercial, accessible media. Defunding PBS will:
* Cut off educational programming for millions of children
* Undermine trusted journalism and local reporting
* Silence diverse and underrepresented voices
* Hit rural communities and small stations the hardest
We can not let Trump continue to claw away at critical services and programs. Sign our petition to urge local leaders to save local NPR and PBS stations from closure: [[link removed]]
* Reject Trump's attacks on public media
* Fully fund and protect local public service programs
* Protect local PBS stations from closure and cuts
* Stand up for the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 and the democratic promise of free, accessible media
I have fond memories of watching Arthur with my sons on PBS. Whether it is quality time with Big Bird or winding down with Masterpiece Mysteries, PBS provides important educational, cultural, newsworthy, and public safety programming. I will continue to oppose any efforts to cut or eliminate their federal funding.
Defend public media that serves everyone — not just those who can afford subscriptions.
