This week we broke ground on the Geneva, an office-to-residential conversion delivering 532 new homes - including 60 permanently affordable units - in Ward 1. It's not only the largest conversion project in DC history, but also the largest PACE (Powering Affordable Clean Energy) deal for green energy financing in the country's history.

This transformative project is a great symbol of what we can get done here in DC. We can adapt to economic changes and innovate in green building practices and financing as we work toward our goal of providing safe and affordable housing for every resident.

WARD 1 UPDATE

Hello Neighbors:

Snow is on the way, and our hardworking teams at DPW have already been preparing to keep the District moving during the winter weather event. You may have seen teams preparing equipment and treating roads to help reduce icy conditions and support safer travel. As a reminder, please give plow trucks and snow vehicles plenty of space maneuver, stop safely, and clear streets effectively. Normally, the District has 230 snowplows. We've contracted for another 100 for a total of 330 snowplows. As snow begins to fall, you can track the plows here.

Starting tomorrow, the first 150 cars can park at DCUSA for free until Monday. Please keep your ticket to be validated. Go to the booth when you are coming out to have your ticket stamped. Thanks to U Street Parking and Commissioner Christine Miller for working together with me on this.

Trash, recycling, and food waste collections may be delayed. DPW crews will continue working as conditions allow to restore regular service as quickly as possible. Visit dpw.dc.gov and download the MyDPW app for the latest updates on collection schedules.

Shelter is available, and I encourage everyone to look out for your neighbors during the storm. If you see someone in need of help, please call the Shelter Hotline at 202-399-7093 or dial 311. If there is an immediate risk to safety, call 911.

Homeowners who are 65 or older, and residents with disabilities, access and functional needs may get help with shoveling snow from Serve DC’s D.C. Volunteer Snow Team. Call Serve DC at 202-727-7925 to sign up for the program.

DC Water encourages residents to wrap exposed pipes, let faucets drip in extreme cold, open under-sink cabinets, and keep your thermostat at 55° or higher.

COUNCIL UPDATES

Be part of performance oversight

When I first took the oath to become your Ward 1 councilmember, I pledged to do this work in partnership with you. We’re entering a season where that partnership is particularly crucial: performance oversight. Oversight of our executive agencies is some of the most important work we do as councilmembers, and the next several weeks will allow us to examine the operations and effectiveness of the various agencies under our purview. To really understand what’s going on at an agency, we need your input. You know how these agencies work – and don’t work. You can help us identify problems and patterns, get to the bottom of what’s standing in the way of progress, and ultimately find the right fixes so that our government can operate effectively and efficiently for every resident.

Welcoming a new councilmember

During our legislative meeting this week, I joined the Council to vote to unanimously confirm Doni Crawford, former Council staff, as our new at-large councilmember. I’m excited to welcome Councilmember Crawford to the Council, and I'm looking forward to working with her and learning from her during the performance oversight and budget process.

Council drives progress on road safety

D.C. roads were much safer in 2025 than in previous years and it reflects the work that we’ve been doing on the Council to go after dangerous drivers, including those from out of state.  

The STEER Act, introduced by Councilmember Charles Allen (and co-introduced by me), implemented in 2025, allows the D.C. Attorney General to sue dangerous drivers where they live. Already the AG has sued 24 drivers with $1.5 million in outstanding tickets. It’s not about the money – it’s about accountability for dangerous driving. 

My legislation allowing DPW and other agencies to immediately tow and impound cars with counterfeit or expired license plates is also in effect, along with other legislation I introduced to regulate food and parcel delivery. 

Premeditated reckless driving is often associated with vehicles that have counterfeit tags and, of course, with multiple driving violations. And excessive parking and license/registration issues can also be associated with criminal activity. 

Together, we are using stronger parking enforcement and civil action to enhance enforcement of egregious violations and dangerous road behavior and it’s making a difference.

I got a sneak peek of the new Tatte in Adams Morgan and met staff before the official grand opening on Jan 22, and I also chatted with Sunflower Bakery, a Tatte partner that provides young adults and teens with learning differences with workforce development training in pastry arts, culinary arts, hospitality, and related industries.

Leaf collection suspended

Fall leaf collection and holiday tree and greenery collection has been suspended as of today, Friday, Jan 23 due to the upcoming winter weather. Please check official DPW channels for updates on when collection is scheduled to resume following the storm event.

Our Brianne on Your Block event on Monday, Jan 26 at Sankofa Video and Book & Cafe has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Feb 11 due to the winter weather forecast. Registration is encouraged but not required.

The lottery deadline for families seeking to enroll their student at a DCPS selective high school or program, DCPS out-of-boundary or citywide high school, or a public charter high school for grades 9-12 is Feb 2.
