Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,  

As you probably know by now, a major winter storm is expected to begin Saturday evening and continue through Sunday, with the possibility of precipitation into Monday. Forecasts call for significant snowfall, the potential for freezing rain, and dangerously cold temperatures. This will be the largest snowfall we've seen in about a decade, and conditions will be hazardous. *Please check on neighbors and older family members and make a plan to stay connected.*

To ensure we have the resources necessary to respond to the storm, I have declared a State of Emergency [ [link removed] ]. As part of the State of Emergency, we are activating a Snow Emergency beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. During a Snow Emergency, motorists may not park on snow emergency routes [ [link removed] ]. The parking restrictions will be in effect from noon on Saturday until at least 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Find a map of the snow emergency routes at snow.dc.gov [ [link removed] ].  

Residents are encouraged to sign up for AlertDC at alert.dc.gov [ [link removed] ] to receive real-time updates and emergency notifications.

*Once snow begins falling, please stay off the roads if you do not need to be out. *

This storm and the extreme cold will be dangerous for people outside. *We have shelter space available for everyone who needs it. *Outreach teams have been working throughout the week to help people get inside, and hypothermia shelters will remain open during the storm. If you see someone who needs shelter, call 311 or the Shelter Hotline at 202-399-7093.  

Ahead of the storm, prepare by charging phones and other devices, locating flashlights and batteries, and get your shovels ready. Remember that property owners and businesses are responsible for clearing sidewalks and alleyways. And thank you to everyone who signed up to serve as a volunteer Snow Hero.

I’m grateful for the many teams that will be working around the clock for the next few days to protect our residents and get our streets and city back open as quickly as possible. Let's work together to support each other and keep everyone informed.

Sign Up to Be a Snow Team Hero

ServeDC is calling on neighbors to help clear walkways for senior residents and people with access and functional needs through the DC Volunteer Snow Team [ [link removed] ]. Snow Team Heroes can pick up their volunteer gear today until 7:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at one of the following locations: 


* 899 North Capitol Street NE 
* 2235 Shannon Place SE 
* Deanwood Community Center (1350 49th Street NE)
* Emery Heights Community Center (5701 Georgia Avenue NW) 

The deadline to sign up to help with this storm is 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, when the final gear pickup ends. However, residents are always encouraged to sign up to be a Snow Team Hero for future storms at snowteam.dc.gov [ [link removed] ].  

Snow Team Heroes will receive their assignments by email or phone anytime from now through Monday, or once the snow starts to let up. Pick up your gear, bundle up, and help keep DC safe!

Borrow eBooks, audiobooks, and digital magazines on your phone or tablet with the Libby [ [link removed] ] app. Build new skills in business, technology, and creative fields through LinkedIn Learning [ [link removed] ]. And you can also watch author talks and cultural programs on the Library's YouTube [ [link removed] ] page.

Mark Your Calendar: DPR Summer Camp Lottery Opens February 2
Summer Camp

[ [link removed] ]Despite the winter weather, it is already time to start thinking about summer. The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Summer Camp Lottery for 2026 will open on Monday, February 2, and close on Monday, February 16. Families can apply at any time during the lottery window. Applications are weighted equally, and placement is determined through a random selection process. DPR summer camps offer a wide range of fun and enriching programs for children ages 3 through 13 at more than 50 locations across DC.  

As a reminder, families who qualify for reduced rates [ [link removed] ] must confirm DC residency and submit a reduced rate application by Monday, February 2 to be eligible for discounted pricing on summer camps and other DPR programs.
