Email from Rep. Nehls Rep. Troy E. Nehls Questions Former Special Counsel Jack Smith at House Judiciary Committee Hearing Greetings! I wanted to take a moment to share with you a recap of what happened last week in Texas' 22nd District and the United States House of Representatives. Tuesday, January 20, 2026, marked one year since President Donald J. Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States. Over the past 365 days, the Trump Administration has delivered historic results for the American people by securing our border, restoring law and order, strengthening our economy, and putting America First once again. Thanks to President Trump’s strong leadership, inflation is down, American energy dominance has returned, and burdensome regulations are being rolled back. Our border is more secure, public safety has improved, and families across the country are feeling relief from rising costs. On the world stage, the United States is leading with strength, rebuilding our standing, and prioritizing national security. In Congress, my House Republican colleagues and I are working to codify President Trump’s America First agenda to ensure these policies are protected and strengthened for years to come. After one year, America is back on track, and our best days are still ahead. This Week in Washington D.C. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Questions Former Special Counsel Jack Smith at House Judiciary Committee Hearing This week, I questioned former Special Counsel Jack Smith during the House Judiciary Committee hearing and made one thing clear: his investigation was never about justice – it was about politics. Under the Biden-Harris Department of Justice, the law was weaponized to target President Donald Trump, the Biden Administration’s top political opponent, and his associates. Flawed legal theories were pushed, political speech was targeted, unlawful gag orders were pursued, and Republican Members of Congress, including the sitting Speaker of the House, were surveilled in violation of the Speech and Debate clause. This investigation also included election-year "evidence" dumps in an attempt to sway voters, pressure on defense attorneys, and an unconstitutional appointment that was ultimately thrown out by a federal judge. The goal was clear from the start: To interfere in an election and tear down President Trump by any means necessary. But the American people saw right through it. They rejected this political witch hunt at the ballot box and sent a clear message that they want an end to the weaponization of our justice system. Watch my remarks from the hearing HERE. Rep. Nehls Votes "YES" on America First Appropriations Bills This week, my House Republican colleagues and I voted “YES” on the final four appropriation bills for Fiscal Year (FY) 2026, concluding the appropriations process. The Trump Administration has made clear its support for these bills, which reflect fiscally responsible governance. H.R. 7147, the Homeland Security Appropriation Act of 2026, focuses on securing our border and protecting public safety. This bill builds on President Trump’s successful border policies, which have driven border crossings to record lows and resulted in the mass removal of illegal aliens. It ends funding for woke Biden-era programs that fueled the border crisis, including grants to non-governmental organizations that facilitated illegal immigration. Instead, it supports our firefighters, first responders, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, the Coast Guard, and the Secret Service. H.R. 7148, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2026, delivers critical funding for our national defense and infrastructure. It delivers a 3.8% pay raise for our troops, strengthens American shipbuilding, invests in advanced weapons and equipment, and improves our ability to deter threats worldwide. This bill also modernizes our nation’s air traffic control system, hires and trains 2,500 new air traffic controllers, improves roadways, and advances housing programs for hardworking Americans. In addition, it cuts funding for woke programs, bans drones from foreign adversaries like China, and permanently prohibits federal mask mandates on public transportation. Additionally, H.R. 7148 will bring $2 million in federal funding for the Sugar Land Regional Airport (SGR) Runway Improvement Project. Specifically, this funding will be used to rehabilitate SGR's Runway 17-35, which, in its current form, poses significant safety concerns for pilots, passengers, and the entire community of Sungar Land, Texas, and the surrounding areas that utilize SGR. These bills, in total, spend less money and replace Biden-era mandates by continuing to secure the border, strengthening our military, cutting woke spending, and using taxpayer dollars responsibly. This is America First in action! Rep. Troy E. Nehls Joins The Joe Pags Show Watch my interview with Joe Pags HERE. Aviation Subcommittee Chairman Troy E. Nehls Holds the Sixth Session of the Bipartisan ATC/NAS Modernization Working Group This week, I held the sixth session of the bipartisan Air Traffic Control (ATC)/National Airspace System (NAS) Modernization Working Group, where we gained valuable insights from industry professionals who represent America’s airports and federal contract towers. Our airports are hubs that connect Americans to their family, friends, and loved ones, and are a place where millions of professionals begin and end their travel. When airports are strong, so is America. As we work to modernize our nation’s ATC and national airspace systems, it’s critical that we listen to those who represent the places that are the starting and ending point for America’s travelers, as well as gain insight from private entities that provide ATC services for nearly 30% of U.S. air traffic. I look forward to continuing these working group sessions and giving more aviation stakeholders the opportunity to share their perspectives as we strengthen and modernize America’s aviation infrastructure. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Votes "YES" Supporting Families and Students Life is a blessing, and we must do all we can to protect the lives of unborn children while also ensuring that women have access to relief and resource centers. This week, I voted "YES" to pass legislation that supports resources and protections for women during pregnancy, including: H.R. 6945, the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act, which ensures that pregnancy resource centers are recognized as legitimate recipients of funding under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. This bill also blocks federal regulators from preventing states from using TANF funds to support these centers. This legislation is a direct response to the Biden Administration’s efforts to discriminate against pregnancy resource centers and limit support for women choosing life. H.R. 6359, the Pregnant Students’ Rights Act, which guarantees that pregnant students are informed of their rights and the resources available to them on campus. These protections include reasonable accommodations such as flexible class schedules, excused absences, and access to childcare assistance, so no student is forced to choose between their education and their child. I will always stand for life, for families, and for policies that empower, not punish, women who choose motherhood. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Meets with Seven Lakes High School Students This week, I enjoyed meeting with students from Seven Lakes High School at the U.S. Capitol. I had the opportunity to answer their questions and discuss how our government operates. We talked about the history of the Capitol building and the legislative process on the House floor. Nehls' Fulshear District Office Hosts Service Academy Day I'm hosting a Service Academy Day on Saturday, May 9, 2026. This event will allow all TX-22 to learn how to attend one of the United States Service Academies. One of the privileges of serving in the United States House of Representatives is the opportunity to nominate outstanding young people from the 22nd Congressional District of Texas to be considered for appointment to our nation’s service academies. Admission to a service academy is a two-tiered process. First, the candidate must apply and meet the minimum standards set by the individual academy. Second, the candidate must complete the congressional application to be considered for an interview with the nomination review board in our office. Please note that the ultimate selection of appointee’s rests solely with academy officials and is based on their competitive evaluation of all nominees. In addition to staff from my office, representatives from all five academies (U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and U.S. Coast Guard Academy) and current academy cadets and midshipmen will be on hand to answer questions. Students, parents, and educators will be able to hear from and meet with representatives on a one-on-one basis to be informed about the excellent opportunities associated with attending these premier educational institutions and the careers they generate. This forum is free; however, pre-registration is required and can be found on my website HERE. It will be held from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at the Rosenberg Civic Center. We encourage students, parents, and educators to attend and take advantage of this valuable opportunity to learn more about these premier institutions and the careers they offer. If you have any questions, please email
[email protected] or call my district office at (346) 762-6600. Assistance for Veterans and Military Families Veterans, service members, and their families in Texas’ 22nd Congressional District deserve timely access to the benefits and services they have earned through their service to our nation. My district office is committed to assisting constituents who are experiencing challenges with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). We can provide assistance with VA disability compensation and pension claims, health care access, education benefits, survivor benefits, and cases involving significant delays or administrative issues. While a congressional office cannot alter VA decisions or provide legal counsel, we can submit formal inquiries, request case updates, and work directly with the VA to help ensure matters are reviewed thoroughly and efficiently. Veterans and their families who need assistance with a VA-related issue are encouraged to contact my district office. It is my privilege to serve those who have honorably served the United States. If you need assistance, please contact my District Office at 346-762-6600 or visit my website.
