Rev. West McNeil speaking at NYSNA Picket

Dear friend,

This week (and always), we honor the legacy and lessons of the life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—an organizer, faith leader, and scholar whose work remains timely as ever.

The struggles the nation faces today mirror those of Dr. King’s time. From striking New York City nurses to ICE’s brutality in Chicago and Minneapolis to America’s imperial designs for Venezuela and Greenland, the unholy alliance of impoverishment, white supremacy, and militarism remains alive and well. Overcoming such powerful systems of subjugation will require righteous resistance led by the poor and dispossessed and anchored in our communities and faith traditions.

Like Dr. King, we must see this moment of great suffering as a commission for bold, decisive, and unsettling collective action.

In this letter:
* Upcoming Events: We Pray Freedom in NYC, Free Families Fridays
* Call to Action: ICE OUT, SING OUT; Support the NYSNA Nurses’ Strike
* In The News: SNAP funding in Florida

Fight poverty, not the poor,

** Support New York State Nursing Association

On Monday, Jan. 12th, nearly 15,000 NYC private sector nurses went on strike to protect patient and nurse safety! For months, nurses have been bargaining for fair contracts, but management has refused to settle fair contracts that include enforceable safe staffing ratios, guaranteed healthcare benefits for frontline nurses, and protections from workplace violence.

You can support nurses in their fight for the fair contracts that New York’s nurses and patients deserve.
