Hi John,
In 2017, then newly-inaugurated President Trump made his loyal supporters a bold promise at the National Prayer Breakfast.
He swore to “totally destroy the Johnson Amendment.”
The Johnson Amendment, passed in 1954, prohibits tax-exempt organizations (like churches) from getting involved in partisan politics. Though Trump has succeeded in weakening enforcement of the rule, he hasn’t scrapped it entirely -- yet.
Allowing nonprofits to enter political campaigns would only increase the influence of dark money groups -- and smother the voices of the voters who politicians are meant to serve. Pew Research reports that two-thirds of Americans have opposed churches taking sides in elections -- but if Trump makes good on his promise, that’s exactly what’ll happen. If we want to protect our country from undue religious influence, we’ll have to unite to stop the agenda of far-right Christian nationalists -- which is why we’re reaching out to you to see where you stand:
