Hi John. I hope you and your family are well.
As you may have heard, weather forecasts show our region may soon experience a large winter storm. Very low temperatures, well below freezing, may begin tomorrow.
As your representative, my job is to always be there for you, regardless of party. That includes connecting Kansans with all the resources and help that I can. So today, I wanted to share some key information to help you prepare and stay safe.

Latest and Accurate Information
• Weather.gov: This website is provided by the National Weather Service. They're the U.S. federal agency responsible for providing accurate weather forecasts. They also give weather warnings and information on how to protect lives and property.
• Winter Storm Warning: Relatedly, the National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for our region. This warning now lasts through 6:00 PM on Sunday. They advise that there may be up to nine inches of snow and that travel will be very difficult. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
• Road condition updates: The Kansas Department of Transportation’s has a website at kandrive.gov to keep you updated. You can also call 511 on your phone for road condition updates.
Safety Information
• Highway assistance: You can call *47 to report an immediate issue, such as an erratic driver on a Kansas highway, to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
• Winter Ready: Did you know that home heating is the second leading cause of home fires? Or that 63 percent of temperature deaths are also related to cold exposure? Learn more about how to keep your family safe at ready.gov.
Local Warming Centers: Free warming centers may be available for those who are in need. Please call ahead of time for more information and stay safe while traveling.
- Johnson County: Scroll down to warming centers in their winter weather guide. Various locations throughout the region may be available.
- Wyandotte County: Wyandotte County also has several warming centers. Please call (913) 621-4690 for more information. Determinations are made on which centers are operating by 8:00 AM each day.
• Public safety resources for Kansans: Find more public safety resources on my website, including local law enforcement contacts. Please be advised that many local authorities are busy during this time and may only have the resources to quickly respond to the most urgent emergencies.
Snow Removal Information
First, here's some important general information to keep in mind about snow removal throughout the Kansas Third District.
• If at all possible, please refrain from traveling during a large snowstorm. You can find additional roadway safety information here from the Kansas Highway Patrol.
• The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and our local counties, cities, or towns are responsible for plowing other various roadways throughout the Kansas Third District.
• KDOT is responsible for snow removal on our highways. You can visit kandrive.gov to find the latest snow removal information or call 511.
More information is below for many communities throughout the Kansas Third District, in alphabetical order. If you have urgent questions and your area isn't listed, please connect with your local city or county for more information.
Help with Heating and Utilities
It’s more important than ever to stay warm now. Here’s how you may be able to get help with your utilities if you need assistance.
• Cold Weather Rule: This is a consumer protection standard by the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) that helps ensure all Kansans can access electric, gas, and water services during the cold winter months. You can also call the KCC to ask questions at (800) 662-0027.
• Utility and financial resources: You can visit my website to learn more about additional help. For example, some families and seniors may qualify for help lowering costs on staying warm, utilities, and energy repairs.
My job is to serve every person and corner of our community – regardless of party. Whether we agree on every issue or not is beside the point. Everyone deserves a government that works for them – not for special interests, big corporations, or the extremes of either party.
