Dear friend,
I regularly update you on our most urgent battles against cockfighting, extreme confinement of farm animals, assaults on wolves and barred owls, and so much more.
Today, I want to give you a 30,000-foot view of our work writ large since our inception in 2018. I want to show you what your support enables in the way of game-changing outcomes for animals.
Since our founding in 2018, Animal Wellness Action has become the nation’s most effective public policy and political advocacy organization for animals. We don’t just oppose cruelty—we change laws, defend them in court, elect champions for animals, defeat their opponents, and enforce the standards we win.
Here are some of the major victories you’ve helped make possible:
* Ended an 84-year-old federal animal testing mandate by leading passage of the FDA Modernization Act 2.0. This breakthrough has started the process of winding down animal testing at the FDA, NIH, and CDC, as well as offering the prospect of lowering drug costs, improving safety, and improving the chances of the discovery of life-saving treatments and cures.
* Defended cage-free farming laws in Congress and the courts, including a landmark U.S. Supreme Court victory in NPPC v. Ross. Today, nearly half of all laying hens and breeding sows are free from cages and crates—up from just two percent a generation ago.
* Outlawed animal fighting on every inch of U.S. soil, including in the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and Guam. We’ve since defended the law and won six federal court rulings that came in response to legal challenges by the cockfighters. We’ve seen an extraordinary step-up of busts of dogfights and cockfights across the nation.
* Helped create the first-ever federal anti-cruelty statute, the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture Act; secured funding for pets at domestic violence shelters, banned the domestic trade in dog and cat meat; and tripled funding to enforce the Horse Protection Act to stop the cruelty of horse “soring.”
* Ended the 80-year-old cow’s milk mandate in public schools, bringing plant-based choices to millions of kids, reducing food waste, protecting children’s health, and easing suffering for dairy cows bred for extreme production.
* Dismantled the big cat pet trade by passing the Big Cat Public Safety Act, shutting down cub-petting schemes and driving notorious abusers out of business for good.
* Forced long-overdue reform in horseracing by creating national anti-doping and track safety standards for the first time in the industry’s history.
* Helped trigger the collapse of the greyhound racing industry by passing a Florida ballot initiative that closed 12 tracks overnight and triggered bans in multiple states, leaving just two tracks operating nationwide.
* Drove horse slaughter to historic lows by maintaining the U.S. slaughter ban and pushing to end the export of American horses for human consumption once and for all.
* Protected wildlife by stopping wolf massacres in court, blocking unlawful rollbacks of Endangered Species Act protections, and securing funding to protect wild horses through fertility control instead of ruthless and dangerous roundups.
Along the way, Animal Wellness Action has helped pass more than a dozen federal laws—from banning cockfighting nationwide to ending the shark fin trade. And we are now leading the next wave of reforms, including ending mink farming, adding more tools to dismantle animal fighting syndicates, protecting bears and kangaroos from the trade in their parts, ending the mass killing of male chicks in the egg industry, and creating dedicated federal animal cruelty enforcement units at the FBI and other sections at the Department of Justice.
Your support fuels the investigations, litigation, lobbying, and political work that make cruelty illegal, punishable, and socially unacceptable. We understand that our treatment of animals is one of the most important moral questions of our age.
We bring urgency to that fight every day. There is so much more work to be done.
Thank you for standing with us and for everything you do every day to help animals.
With gratitude and determination,
Wayne Pacelle [[link removed]] Wayne Pacelle
