Friend, for the first time since the start of this war, Ukraine has declared a state of emergency over widespread power outages. A recent wave of drone and missile strikes have left hundreds of thousands of civilians in Ukraine without power or heat in the middle of freezing winter weather. Here are three things you need to know about the situation right now:
1. Millions of people are displaced: After nearly four years of war, the ongoing humanitarian crisis is upending lives. As many as 3.7 million people are internally displaced, and more than 12 million still need urgent assistance.
2. Thousands of families are without electricity: Thousands of buildings in Kyiv are still without heating and the country’s energy grid is operating at just 60% functionality, with overnight temperatures recently dropping to around -40F. Hospitals are relying on emergency generators, and families are doing whatever they can to stay warm and survive.
3. Americares continues to respond: Since the start of the war, Americares has delivered over $147 million in aid to the region, reaching civilians on the ground through more than 80 partner organizations.
