Advocacy Action Days have officially begun!

Last week, thousands of people just like you rallied to protect suicide prevention and mental health grants at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). This was a MAJOR victory for suicide prevention, and just one example of how anyone can join this grassroots movement that is making a difference. When you become an AFSP Volunteer Advocate, you send the message that your voice matters, and that suicide prevention is an essential part of state and federal policy.

This January through May is your opportunity to join thousands of Volunteer Advocates at state capitals across the country for Advocacy Action Days. At these special events, dedicated Advocates meet with state officials to raise awareness about key policies and legislation that can help prevent suicide. Equipped with training and their own powerful stories of loss survival and lived experience, these Advocates are at the forefront of AFSP’s mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.

Last year, AFSP chapters organized 45 Advocacy Action Day Events, with Volunteer Advocates successfully supporting 28 bills that have now been enacted into law. Through their tireless efforts and passion for the cause, chapters and Advocates promoted legislation that:

- Sustains funding for 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, with Illinois becoming the 12th state to enact a 988 telecom fee, similar to how 911 is funded

- Enhances the behavioral health workforce, with more Texas mental health professionals now eligible for loan repayment assistance, prioritizing those who practice in rural areas and are fluent in a language of need in the professional’s practice area

- Improves lethal means safety, with the California Department of Transportation now required to identify best practices for implementing suicide deterrent barriers on bridges and overpasses

By joining a 2026 Advocacy Action Day event, you can help us influence even more lifesaving legislative advancements like the ones above. Read more about the 2026 Advocacy Action Days in our recent [news release]([link removed]).
