For decades, the EPA has set pollution rules that factored in the health benefits of cleaner air for the public — including fewer asthma attacks, lower rates of heart and lung disease, fewer hospital visits, and fewer premature deaths. Decades of pollution standards have saved tens of billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of lives. |

Now, under Trump, the EPA plans to stop counting those health benefits in its decision-making; the cost of a human life is now $0, the cost of an ER visit triggered by air pollution is — you guessed it — $0. |

Instead, the EPA will calculate only the financial costs to corporations of complying with pollution rules, while stripping out the economic value of protecting public health. The shift would apply to rules covering some of the most dangerous and widespread air pollutants in the country. |

Fine particle pollution and smog are linked to asthma, heart and lung disease, and premature death. Even moderate exposure can cause serious, lasting harm to our health, with children, seniors, communities near industrial sites, and low-income communities bearing the greatest risk. The Trump administration wants to keep the public IN THE DARK about how many more people will die, how many more kids will have asthma attacks, how many more ER visits for heart attacks and strokes will happen as it eliminates pollution standards for power plants, cars and trucks, and other industries. |

Bottom line: Whether they count it or not, Trump’s rollbacks mean dirtier air, worse health outcomes, sicker communities, and higher costs for us all. |
