Dear Friend,
As we begin the new year, I want to thank you for your continued partnership and dedication to strengthening our communities. I’ll be honest, it’s been a difficult start to 2026. But we’ve also seen countless examples, from Minnesota and across the country, of the power of community. In our democracy, there is no wizard behind the curtain determining the outcome. Instead, there are people like you who choose to show up for friends, neighbors, and strangers alike – and who refuse to back down.
I look forward to working with you in the year ahead to fight for our community in San Diego and build towards a future where everyone has the chance to thrive.
Below are a few federal grant opportunities currently available:
Choice Neighborhood Implementation Grants
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grants support the implementation of a comprehensive plan that focuses on the revitalization of a severely distressed public housing and/or HUD-assisted housing project, while also improving the surrounding neighborhood and providing supportive services to improve quality of life outcomes for residents of the target housing project.
Application deadline: 11:59 PM ET on March 9, 2026.
Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) Grant Program
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s BUILD Program funds projects that have a significant local or regional impact and improve surface transportation infrastructure. Grants support planning or construction projects that enhance safety, environmental sustainability, quality of life, mobility and community connectivity, economic competitiveness (including tourism), state of good repair, partnership and collaboration, and innovation.
Application deadline: 5:00 PM ET on February 24, 2026.
Assisted Outpatient Treatment Program
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) program is to implement AOT in communities to support adults with serious mental illness who meet state-specific criteria for AOT. (Note: last week, the Trump Administration announced and then reversed massive cuts to mental health and addiction program grants. If you or someone you know is experiencing issues accessing designated grant funding, please reach out to my office: sarajacobs.house.gov/help.)
Application deadline: TBD, grant will be posted January 30, 2025
You can find up-to-date information on open federal grant opportunities here. I recommend bookmarking this resource, as it is frequently updated. The spreadsheet includes grants related to agriculture; arts and culture; business and commerce; community development; consumer protection; disaster prevention and relief; education; employment, labor, and training; energy; the environment; food and nutrition; health; infrastructure; income security and social services; natural resources; opportunity zones; regional development; science, technology, and research and development; transportation; and more. Grants can be easily sorted by category, and previous opportunities are archived by month for reference.
In addition to sharing open and upcoming federal funding opportunities, my office can also help your grant efforts with a letter of support for any federal grant application. Congressional letters of support help show grant reviewers that your project has buy-in from regional stakeholders and make your application more competitive. If you would like to request a letter of support from our office, please contact [email protected] to learn more about how my staff and I can help you.
Thank you again for your partnership and for the work you do every day on behalf of our community.
