John, let’s be clear:

Targeting Jerome Powell is just the latest escalation of Trump's corrupt weaponization of the government in his pursuit of unfettered power, and everyone should be paying attention to it.

The Department of Justice served the Federal Reserve with grand jury subpoenas, threatening a criminal indictment of Powell, ostensibly for testimony he gave to Congress about the costs of a Treasury Department construction project.

As Chairman Powell himself laid out, that was merely an excuse, a pretext, and the administration is threatening criminal charges because the Federal Reserve is doing its job: setting interest rates based on what it determines will serve the public rather than acceding to Trump’s demands.

These actions will only weaken the economy, even as they threaten to chill and silence the president’s critics.

This latest abuse of the Justice Department to go after the president's enemies will be unsuccessful. The campaign against Powell is patently frivolous, plainly just a pretext to try to intimidate him or others on the board. We won’t let him get away with it.
