16 years ago today, the Supreme Court handed down the Citizens United
ruling, one of the worst and most consequential decisions in modern times.
Since then, corporations and special interest groups have spent over $4.5
BILLION in dark money to influence federal elections, silence grassroots
candidates, and buy influence from the local level all the way to the
White House.
President Barack Obama said the ruling is "damaging to our democracy."
Senator Bernie Sanders warned that now, "billionaires are literally able
to buy elections and candidates."
Hillary Clinton called on the Supreme Court to reverse the decision and
get "unaccountable money out of our politics!"
