Here’s a little-known news story that isn’t getting enough attention:
Right now, Republicans are asking the Supreme Court for their next major win: dismantling campaign finance laws.
In a case now before the Court, the GOP wants to eliminate limits on how closely party committees can coordinate spending with candidates – effectively allowing unlimited, coordinated money to flood House and Senate races nationwide. If they win, it would be the biggest rollback of campaign finance rules since Citizens United.
Republicans know they’re outmatched when turnout is high – so instead, they’re trying to tilt the system even further toward billionaires, mega-donors, and national party bosses. A ruling in their favor would let party committees operate like super PACs, consolidating power in the hands of a few wealthy interests.
Democrats are fighting back in court, but no Supreme Court decision will protect democracy on its own.
The real firewall is voters – especially in the most competitive districts where turnout can still overwhelm big money.
