Friend, do you remember a few weeks ago, when CBS’s new MAGA-friendly leadership tried to spike the 60 Minutes segment about the Venezuelan immigrants who Trump sent to the CECOT prison in El Salvador?
Well, the segment is finally out, and it’s just as damning as we thought.
The title of the report on CECOT compiled by Human Rights Watch says it all: “You Have Arrived in Hell.” That was what the prison director proudly said to this group of men upon arrival.
The report concluded that prisoners at CECOT experienced “systematic torture and other abuses” as well as inhumane conditions, prolonged isolation, denial of basic hygiene and sanitation, limited access to health care and medicine, and sexual violence. The White House justified this torture, claiming that the men sent there were “heinous monsters” and “terrorists.”
But the truth is a tricky thing for MAGA: Half of the men sent there by the Trump administration had no prior criminal record in the US or Venezuela. Only 3% had been convicted of a violent or potentially violent offense.
So let’s just set the record straight. Trump wanted to make an example of Venezuelan immigrants, so he sent them to be brutally tortured without due process or a chance to prove their innocence.
It’s disgusting, despicable, and what dictators do. No one should be locked away without their day in court, let alone labeled a “monster”, sent hundreds of miles away to a foreign country, and tortured and abused. It’s not law and order — it’s complete amoral anarchy.
Now we see why the White House wanted this story to disappear. Now we see why CBS’s leadership tried to stop it from airing. The Trump administration is a criminal enterprise, and it must be defeated by the forces of democracy, justice, and accountability.
