John,
Three years ago today, eleven lives were tragically lost to gun violence
in Monterey Park, California.
The city’s Asian community was celebrating the Lunar New Year the night of
the shooting, and what should have been a joyous celebration was turned
upside down into trauma and fear. This tragedy came just three days after
a different fatal mass shooting in Half Moon Bay.
Today’s anniversary reminds us that there are no corners of America
untouched by the trauma of our worsening gun violence epidemic. For young
Americans, there are no safe spaces to celebrate, to gather within their
communities, or to live without fear.
This isn’t a talking point, it’s a crisis.
The time has passed for our leaders to take action. Their failure to
impose a federal ban on assault weapons is more than cowardice — it’s a
dereliction of their sworn duty to protect people in this country.
Today, we are honoring the lives lost not just by remembering them, but
also fighting with everything we have to create a safer future for all of
us.
Thank you for standing with survivors.
